Welcome to Miss Burkett's Class

Welcome to 2nd Grade

My name is Randi Burkett.  I am beginning my fifth year as an educator and I am looking forward to an exciting and challenging new school year.  I have taught second grade for the past four years here at W.O. Parmer.  I graduated from Greenville High School in 2002.  In 2006, I graduated from Auburn University at Montgomery with a Bachelor's of Science in Childhood Education.  In May 2011, I graduated with my Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Auburn University at Montgomery.

I hope that your child finds school exciting and enjoyable.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  You can call the school and leave a message or send me an e-mail.  I will respond as soon as possible.  I look forward to a wonderful year with you and your child.

The “HORSE Folder” is one way to let you know what is happening in our classroom on a daily basis. The pockets of the folder will be labeled “Homework” and “Keep at Home.” The folder will be sent home every day. Homework assignments will be on the “Homework” side of the folder. Please make sure you check your child’s homework each night, sign, and return the work to school the following day. Homework will be given nightly except on Fridays and holidays. A homework calendar will also be included in the folder. Look for notes, announcements, and class or school information on the “Keep at Home” side of the folder.

Our school day will begin at 7:50 a.m. and end at 3:00p.m. The tardy bell will ring at 7:50 a.m. and instruction will begin at this time. Please do not be late. You are encouraged to allow your child to walk to class alone the first day of school due to traffic congestion.   Please remember each absence from school is a day missed of learning. An absence will not be excused unless a written and signed note is sent to school upon your child’s return. Make sure you are familiar with the attendance policy found in the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Snack

Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria from 7:10 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. Lunch and breakfast can be paid for on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Prices are as follows:
Breakfast:   75¢ (full pay)
                 30¢ (reduced)
Lunch:        $1.50 (full pay)
                 $0.40 (reduced)
                 $2.50 (adult)
We will have snack each day. Your child may bring a snack from home or purchase items from school. If your child chooses to buy snack and water from school, please send correct change each day.
                 snack $0.75
                 water $0.75

To create and maintain a positive learning environment for all students, I will follow the behavior and discipline policies set forth by the Butler County Board of Education. These policies can be found in the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct. Please read and discuss the rules with your child. Don’t forget to sign and return the signature page from the back of the handbook.
Getting a card flipped in our classroom is a great thing! Each day the students will start with a green card. When students exhibit good behavior they will flip their card to yellow. Another compliment on their behavior will get their card flipped to orange. After orange is red and “Red Hot” behavior. Once students earn “Red Hot,” the Behavior Folder will be sent home with a note to parents bragging on the exceptional behavior. Celebrate your child’s outstanding behavior at home, sign the folder, and return it to school the following day.
If a student exhibits inappropriate behavior the folder will be sent home with a note specifically explaining the behavior. Talk to your child about his/her behavior, sign the folder, and return it to me the following day. If the folder is not signed or returned the following day I will call you to make sure you saw the folder.

Parent Responsibilities

Homework is an important part of your child’s school experience. Supporting good work habits requires a joint effort. I will support your child and encourage good work habits at school. Your child will benefit greatly from your support and encouragement at home. Following is a list of things to ensure your child is prepared for school each day:
  • Check HORSE folder each night
  • See that homework assignments are completed and returned to school on time
  • Listen to your child read to you each night (at least 20 minutes)!
  • Sign and send papers that need to be returned to school each week and discard extra papers that do not need to be returned
  • Read all weekly newsletters and notes sent home
